We are constantly hearing more and more about fruits like cranberries and pomegranates and blueberries and a myriad of other fruits that are known to be high in antioxidants. It is known that they counteract the visible signs of aging on our skin. Antioxidants fight and destroy free radicals floating through the bloodstream that if left unchecked could do untold damage to our systems. Antioxidants promote weight loss and muscle gain. They do so much already that I wasn’t prepared for what I was reading when I came across a study that used pomegranate juice for a study on men with prostate cancer.
Over a period of five years it was noted that the group of men who were given eight ounces of pomegranate juice daily had a slower progression of PSA than the men who were not given the juice. PSA, prostate specific antigen, is what they use to monitor the cancer. It took four times longer for the PSA levels to double in the men who were given the juice than the study group who didn’t drink pomegranate use. This study was conducted on a group of men who had prostate cancer that was localized and hadn’t spread. The ramifications are overwhelming.
Now, understand that no one is claiming that pomegranates can cure cancer. These scientists are stating that they noted a significant slowing in the rate in which it is likely to metastasize, or spread. It’s a starting place for further research that shows great promise. To me that’s amazing in itself. No matter what you do in life or where you want to go, you’ll never reach your destination if you don’t start the journey. Pomegranates could very well be the beginning of an amazing treasure hunt to find a cure down the road.
