Homeopathy is a fascinating philosophy. It proclaims that the body can heal itself on its own, such is the mechanism! This alternative medicinal practice has earned approval in practical fields. The idea of remedy in this philosophy claims that “like cures like”. That is, if a certain element is causing the body to give out symptoms of illness, then injection of a little more amount of the same element in the body may process healing. Homeopathic treatment requires solutions containing potent elements, usually extracted from herbal sources or minerals, for treating diseases. The birthplace of homeopathy is Germany but today, the legacy of this therapeutic practice is extensive, covering India and many European countries.
Safety and efficiency of homeopathic treatment is a debated issue. Some scientists claim that there could be “placebo effect” at work as far as success in homeopathic treatment is concerned. To support this view, it must be noted that serious illnesses like cancer, heart-disease, serious injuries, third degree allergies or emergencies; evidently, cannot be treated by homeopathy but minor issues like small cuts and fractures, rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome etc. are claimed to have been remedied by homeopathy. Critical scientists offer that, most of the therapy in case of minor medical issues, credited to homeopathy, actually happens in the mind, a typical placebo phenomenon where the user gives in to the belief that, some improvement is happening due to homeopathic-drug intake but in actuality, homeopathic drugs carry so little amount of “active” substance that healing processes cannot be brought about. On the other hand, supporters of homeopathy trust that the diluted active substances urge the bodily system to bring about a healing process. Studies so far have failed to determine what the case exactly is.
Another noteworthy fact regarding homeopathy is the preparations made by different homeopathic doctors show a discrepancy. There is no standardization in homeopathic drugs as yet. This alternative medicinal therapy, though highly acclaimed, should never forgo one’s conventional medical treatment without professional advice.
Though many key concepts of homeopathy are at disagreement with conventional methodology of chemistry and physics, for certain, homeopathy is devoid of any possibility of causing side-effects since homeopathy practice incorporates only little amount of “active” element in its drugs. This fundamental of homeopathy ensures mild effects and less risk of nerve-racking side-effects. In this respect, homeopathy is a far safer option than allopathic drugs.
Homeopathic remedies are controlled under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA). As standardization of homeopathic drugs has not been sanctioned, FDA allows marketing of homeopathic drugs without preapproval by the board, by any practicing homeopathic doctor. This is somehow a big loophole in the system as adulterated or unchecked, fatally potent drugs, labeled as homeopathic drugs can flow in the market, causing harm to consumers ignorant of this risk.
Other alternative medical practices in relation to homeopathic treatment, namely, Isopathy, Flower Remedy, Veterinary usage of Homeopathy and Electrohomeopathy, are highly interesting alternative treatments, but these are yet to hit the mainstream.
